Therapy for Children & Families

WHITBY ON

Whether the issue is circumstantial or developmental, therapy can help children and families can learn how to shift their mindset and heal their relationships.

EACH CASE IS INDIVIDUAL, HOWEVER IN GENERAL WE PROCEED THE FOLLOWING WAY ACCORDING TO AGE:

Therapy for children 12 years old or under:

The 1st session is usually with the parent(s) and child. Consecutive sessions alter between: one with the child, next parent-child. This is because the younger the child, the more dependent they are on their interactions with the parents.

For people 13 years old or over:

The 1st session is usually with the parent(s) and child. Consecutive sessions may or may not be alter between: one with the child, next parent-child. This is because at this age children are starting to become more independent of their parents, yet still depend greatly on these family interactions.

The following techniques and approaches are used in sessions:

CBT: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

CBT is evidence-based therapy based around that centres around the educating the client about what is happening inside their minds, brains and bodies that makes them react in a problematic way. We use play and expressive arts to teach the ways to control strong emotions, improve their interaction with parents and take better care of themselves.

Clients can plan to attend biweekly for 8 or more sessions.

Expressive Arts Therapy

ExAT is a different way to aid mental health and well-being using visual arts, music, voice and movement, creative writing and drama as a way to explore, express and heal our internal world. It helps create a sound therapeutic relationship and to apply coping skills in a meaningful way. Expressive arts can be combined with CBT or DBT.

Medication & Diagnosis with Psychiatrist

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in diagnosis and treatment of behavioural and thought disorders. If your child has a developmental issue such as ADHD, FASD or ASD a psychiatrist may help manage their medications and advise treatment. These visits are offered through our partner Psychotherapymatters.com a collaborative virtual psychiatric clinic. Your therapist is always present in these consultations.

The Safe & Sound Protocol (SSP)

It is an innovative intervention designed to improve an individual’s social communication behaviors by reducing hearing sensitivities (i.e., hyperacusis) and improving the ability to process human speech. It is 5 hours of listening to specially treated music remotely or in-person.

EMDR: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing

EMDR is a proven treatment for PTSD, applicable to anxiety disorders and OCD, phobias. It a non-traditional, structured and directive form of psychotherapy that we can combine with play to help children and teens that have a hard time facing fears or need relief from past events.

The therapy is to teach the client coping skills first and then we focus on working with the big fear or traumatic experience. In that stage, during session we choose to focus on an image, a memory, a bad dream or any other symbol that represents the fear of the client while using bilateral stimulation which is associated with a reduction of the emotional discomfort. This allows the fear to be processed in the background of the mind while we play and reprocessing in a symbolic way.

Clients are recommended to commit to 6-12 sessions on a weekly or bi-weekly basis.

Best suited for clients who experience recurring negative memories, vivid flashbacks, phobias or OCD.
