Generally, for children aged 12 and under
the first appointment includes both the child and their parent(s). Following that, sessions typically alternate between individual sessions with the child and joint parent-child sessions. This approach recognizes that younger children are strongly influenced by their relationships and interactions with their parents.
For individuals aged 13 and older,
the first appointment usually includes both the young person and their parent(s). After that, sessions may involve the young person individually, the parent(s), or both together, depending on the client’s needs and treatment goals. At this stage, young people are developing greater independence while still being significantly influenced by family relationships and interactions.
Whether you are not sure how things got to where they are and even if you don’t know where you’re headed in your marriage or as a family, a skilled relationship counsellor can help. They will clarify the skills that need to be gained and the boundaries that need to be in place. Their focus is to nurture a healthy relationship, not to help a particular individual. Explore the power of healing together.
