About Chris Wellwood Reg. Psychotherapist

Chris Wellwood is a Registered Psychotherapist at The Insight Clinic who provides a safe, trusting space for individuals, couples, and families to work through emotional, behavioural, and relational challenges. With over 20 years of experience, Chris helps clients build practical coping skills, improve communication, strengthen emotional regulation, and move toward meaningful growth.

Chris supports children ages 8 and up, teens, adults, couples, and families. He often works with clients experiencing anxiety, low mood, school phobia, social phobia, emotional regulation difficulties, anger, stress, relationship conflict, family tension, and communication challenges. He also has extensive experience supporting couples and high-conflict families as they work to reduce tension, break unhealthy communication patterns, and rebuild more stable, fulfilling relationships.

Chris enjoys working across the lifespan, whether supporting a child in building resilience, helping a teen manage high school pressure, or guiding an adult through burnout, stress, or relationship concerns. He is especially energized by community and family-focused therapy, where support can extend beyond the individual and help entire support systems create healthier patterns.

His approach is practical, approachable, and tailored to each client’s needs. Chris uses talk therapy to create a steady space for reflection and combines this with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, and family- or community-focused therapy. In simple terms, he helps clients understand their thoughts, emotions, behaviours, and relationships while building tools they can use at home, school, work, and in daily life.

Clients and colleagues often describe Chris as approachable, authentic, calm, and easy to talk to. He does not rely on clinical jargon or a rigid expert role. Instead, he shows up as a real person who is genuinely invested in helping clients feel understood, supported, and equipped to move forward.

What makes Chris’s approach different is his ability to meet clients exactly where they are while looking at the whole system around them. He does not treat people in isolation or force them into a one-size-fits-all model. Instead, he works collaboratively with clients, couples, families, schools, and community supports when appropriate to better understand the bigger picture and support meaningful change.

For Chris, client success means leaving therapy with a lasting, practical toolkit. Success may look like a child feeling more confident, a teen managing emotions more effectively, an adult coping better with stress, a couple communicating more clearly, or a family feeling steadier and more connected. His goal is for clients and families to feel understood, supported, and better prepared to handle life’s challenges long after therapy has ended.

Chris is also continuing to grow his work with WSIB clients and remains committed to building meaningful therapeutic relationships with individuals, couples, and families seeking support.

Outside of work, family is very important to Chris. He enjoys watching his daughter play hockey, volunteering with his local minor hockey association, golfing with his son, reading, and spending time outdoors in nature.

My Expertise Area & Features

Couples Therapy
+

Romantic relationships can face many challenges—especially when communication breaks down and conflicts remain unresolved. Many couples struggle with:

  • Recurring arguments that never seem to get resolved
  • Misunderstandings that lead to frustration or emotional distance
  • Difficulty expressing needs, feelings, or boundaries in a constructive way

Example: You and your partner keep having the same argument, leaving both of you feeling unheard and stuck. Over time, tension builds and healthy communication feels harder to reach.

Chris helps couples:

  • Strengthen communication skills to promote clarity and connection
  • Resolve conflicts in a respectful, productive way
  • Break out of negative patterns and cycles
  • Build a more supportive, collaborative partnership
Anger Management
+

Uncontrolled anger can damage relationships, impact work and family life, and lead to stress and regret. Many individuals experience:

  • Explosive reactions or difficulty managing frustration
  • Feeling overwhelmed by emotions and unable to express them constructively
  • Struggles with relationships due to short temper or communication breakdowns

Example: You lash out during an argument, saying things you don’t mean, only to regret it later. This cycle creates distance and tension in your relationships.

Chris specializes in anger management therapy to help individuals:

  • Identify emotional triggers and manage reactions effectively
  • Develop healthier communication and conflict resolution skills
  • Practice mindfulness techniques to stay calm under pressure
  • Learn strategies to process emotions constructively and work through conflicts
Helping Families Through Divorce, Separation & School-Related Stress
+

Family changes and school-related challenges can be overwhelming for both children and parents. Chris provides specialized support for:

  • Divorce & High-Conflict Family Situations – Helping children and adults cope with emotional distress, co-parenting struggles, and family restructuring
  • School-Related Stress – Addressing academic pressure, bullying, social anxiety, and behavioral challenges

Example: A child struggling in school due to bullying may develop anxiety and avoid social interactions. Meanwhile, separated parents may find co-parenting stressful and overwhelming.

Chris works with families to:

  • Help children develop confidence, resilience, and emotional regulation
  • Guide parents through co-parenting challenges with effective strategies
  • Provide emotional support for children adjusting to family changes
  • Teach problem-solving skills to navigate academic and social stress
